Overlooked Game Guys #4

April 25th, 2008 by andy

Rick Dangerous

Aaaah… Rick Dangerous - there was a cracking (if frequently horrendously unfair) game. Fire button + Up to shoot, fire button + Down to set a bomb and accidentally blow yourself up while trying to go down a ladder.

But enough of the game, this is all about the character. And whilst he’s been squidged horribly into a square - his shoulders up by his ears and his hat pulled so far down that it rather implies that Rick has literally no forehead, he’s clearly supposed to be a sort of Indiana Jones type. Which would make him ripe for fan art…

But, no. It would appear that the artist behind the sprite, and the artist who drew the box art had rather different ideas about Rick’s character as I think this comparison rather neatly shows:

Box Art on left, Title Screen on right

Er, indeed. You thought you were buying a game with a hunky action hero in it, but when the game loaded you realised that actually it stars a very poorly drawn thug. Not so much Rick Dangerous as Biffa Bacon with a fedora hat on.

Still, if you owned the game on C64 you didn’t get that picture on the title screen, so we can live in denial and pretend it never happened.

Ok, Andy

Why IS THIS a blog, and not a simple thread? huh?

Er. It’s part of a blog series which has been running for days. ;p

Well, this way it’s a blog post AND a thread.

Sheesh, when i post threads I get, "Hey why isn’t this a blog post?" and now I do a blog post and I get, "Why isn’t this just a thread?".

Love Conrad B. Hart. He has a cameo in Gibbage.

Unfortunately for some versions they gave him some sort of violet T-shirt, which looked horrific.

Never heard of this character let along this game. And why is the right US cover awful and not the EU? Are you joking? :P I like the Us one better.

Shocking, Cyber, shocking! One of the best action/platformers of all time.

And the U.S cover version better than the European one? Are you sure? I thought I’d made it clear that the U.S cover was the one on the right. The trendy stylish one on the left is the good one.

Well i haven’t played it or seen it anywhere before, not even on the abandon games type of games, where they let you download old games etc. which means, it can’t be that good.

And I like the U.S cover, what so cool with the left one? :P
The left one has a beam raping his face… hehe

Also, without wanting to sound antagonistic, your sphere of experience with video games does not necessarily represent the full picture of what is good and what is not.

Personally, I’d be amazed if many who were around games during the Amiga / Megadrive days had no idea what Flashback was.

Quote chris

Flashback is the highest selling French developed game of all time, Cyber

Take my word for it, the game is amazing. The beam of light in the face actually makes a lot of sense given the plot. The Queeeeeeeessssssssst for Ideeeeeeeeeentiteeeeeeeeee on the other hand, might be a semi-accurate factoid of the plot, but does sound totally stupid. Basically the one on the left (which is also the title screen image on all the good versions of the game) has the punch, the pizazz, the iconic imagery, the "I’ll remember that cover for ever" feel. The one on the right is a competently drawn, but otherwise utterly forgettable image. Not good for a cover, in other words.

Flashback was one of my fave Amiga games!

But also, the game that Delphine made before it was fantastic, and that too features a very overlooked lead character!

Another World stared a red haired scientist called Lester Knight Chaykin. (They pick the best names!)

Unlike Flashback, this game was done with vector graphics instead of sprites giving it a very unique look and feel. (These were again rotoscoped from camcorder footage of the designers younger brother).

Similar in style to flashback, it featured many vector graphic cutscenes to tell the story, but using no text or dialogue (except alien strangeness), just motions and facial expressions. The game and the cutscenes all rolled together into one continuous cinematic sequence, which was apparantly inspired by the Dragons Layer games. There was always cool stuff going on in the background and the foreground of each scene, which you can see in these shots (and the vid ).

Check out the totaly amazing vector graphic intro! (Actualy it’s a recording of the entire game).

Ooh, Flashback! That takes me back (in a flash? ). I remember quite a bit from this game (I can still hear in my mind the alien gibberish that sounded something like "augusta, augusta magella" ), and surprisingly, watching it even now, the animation still looks as smooth as I recall… but yes, I truly remember nothing about the main character.

The American box art is indeed horrible, but pretty much all original box art that was made just for the American market was incredibly bad

Quote MashPotato

andy

Yeah, Another World was pretty fab too but personally I preferred the gameplay of Flashback.

Also, those screenies are from the redux version are they not? Anyhoo, the art design was pretty splendid in the game.

Yeah they are from the redux (The Amiga ones I found were miniature).

I also preferred the gameplay of Flashback . It was great running around doing crazy acrobatics . There was a great move you could do when hanging from a ledge, you could freefall and end up hanging from a lower ledge, even if it was a few screens down.

Here is a vid of the final run from the exploding alien planet, which shows off his acrobatics greatly .

Incidentally, when I did this final run I kept repeatedly dying in the last room because I had no idea that there was a lift in it. hehe!

(Warning: It’s the ugly purple-shirted Megadrive version, Dan. )
(Warning 2: It also features Bon-Jovi for some reason.)

Quote Nickenstien

chris

My fave was jumping down and grabbing a ledge, poking my feet between the two guards, and climbing up quickly so that they shoot each other, one of them falling off the side of a ledge.

Haha, yeah!!

There was also a bit where you could throw a rock past a laser-sensor and the gaurds would get blasted by the laser!

I thought this was a discussion thread about overlooked characters attached to a blog. My sincere apologies.

Quote Nickenstien

andy

So let me get this straight…

You see this thread, you click on the link, there’s a blog post called "Overlooked Game Guys #1" which starts with "So here it is, the first installment - hold on to your hats!", that then proceeds to talk exclusively about one videogame character, and you thought that was it for the entire "overlooked" thing?

Sheesh! Good to know people actually read the stuff on the blog

P.S. It is a discussion thread about "overlooked" characters. It’s just that preferably the discussion would be about the one I blogged or else there’d be nothing for #2 or #3 etc. I’m just taking the piss, just don’t go using up any more, okay? Or I’ll have to kill you

Thanks for the link and your right about the video game experience, but I was around later when Amiga was around.

Highest selling french developed game….of all times? Either they became worse at making game or something went wrong up to todays date, no? :P

The character is almost a faceless man btw :P

And I still like the right cover :P

PS: I suggest someone add multi quote function, so its easier to quote multiple people in one post. Because I don’t know of any good way to do it or quick ways.

You’re wrong. You just haven’t realised it yet.

It’s cheesy crap.

It’s the kind of thing a boardroom full of idiots (IE marketing executives) would like. A contrived mish-mash of images that all end up cancelling each other out. "Ohh lets squeeze a whizzing space-ship into that wasted space in the bottom left, the kids love space-ships, it will be better!", etc…

The simple terrified eyes with the beam is a haunting image that I have never forgotten. It’s infinitely better.

I think the PC version was funny shirted. Megadrive was deffo classic white, because that’s what I played it on.

Remember how if you had your back to a wall, ran away amd immediately turned back, you could walk through walls? CLASSIC.

I’ll check out BASS, and I look forward to much hilarity when I am able to understand that LINC joke! Pressure’s on, Andy!

Well considering the i and the o are next to each other, a person typing quickly could accidentally hit the i then the o and only hit the one s as they feel that they have typed the correct number of letters. An editor would not catch the mistake as the word nios is a correct word and spelling and since it is a boss name it would make some sense.

So yes someone could.

Hehe, that is his big teethy grin, but it does look like a mustache too, like the sprite could be called Horatio Smythe IV or something.

I certainly agree that it is a fab yet (almost joystick smashingly) infuriating game.
