Capcom deliver 3D game character masterclass

May 1st, 2008 by andy

What a challenge! How do you turn some of the most iconic and well-designed videogame characters of all time into 3D equivalents without compromising the style?

Capcom show us how:

Stylish!

Facial Animation!

Dramatic!

Yep, it all just goes to prove that it’s not the size of the tool it’s how you wield it. All we’ve got here are polygons, normal maps, some textures, and lighting - just like every other PS3 and XBox360 game - but with an added extra pinch of talent. Actually, lots of talent.

That looks fantastic!!

Cool video showing it in action –> Street Fighter IV - Arcade gameplay

It looks like they have kept the gameplay as simple and brilliant as SF2 without dicking around with the mechanics, opting instead to just make it look completely amazing! The still action shots look like paintings!

Stunning. Just stunning.

I agree 100% with your blog Andy! It’s only stunning! WOW! (and I’m a big fan of SF2)

Love the art direction the game’s heading! *drools*

This looks genuinely amazing! Still maintains the feel of the 2D SF2 fighting but looks beautiful. and looks like the best kind of 2D to 3D conversion where they’ve done it without messing with the game mechanics.

I admit I wasn’t that enthralled with it when I first saw it, but watching the trailer again it looks better than I remember. Maybe it was just a kneejerk reaction to the loss of 2D-ness
I find it amusing how none of the SF3 characters seem to have made the cut for this one

It does give me a problem, as while I think SF2 was great, I think also SF3 was perfection. I hope it has similar gameplay to 3.

Also, isn’t it odd that no character after the initial SF2 characters have been any good? They just aren’t as striking.

I’m with you there–I liked SF3 the best too (although I’m a bit of a button-masher, so I don’t really know why that is exactly ). I think the SF3 characters may be less memorable simply because that game wasn’t as popular as SF2, so there’s less cultural awareness of them

I agree, because… personally I prefer the SF3 cast over SF2 any day. Only thing its missing is Sagat.

And maybe Blanka, but you can’t have everything!

SFIV has been looking better and better with every update, more excited for this over anything else at the moment.
