Pandemic announce fancypants LOTR game!

May 8th, 2008 by andy

It’s called “The Lord of the Rings: Conquest”, and it’s basically a new Star Wars: Battlefront game with all the Star Wars-y bits taken out, orcs and elves thrown in, and the name changed. Sound exciting? No? That’s probably because I’ve made it sound a bit naff whereas IGN made it sound really really cool.

Woo! Looks nice!

Apparently you’ll be able to choose to play any battle from the books and films (as well as some completely made up ones) and fight as pretty much any role. So be an elf archer defending Helm’s Deep, for example. Sweet, eh? Still no? Oh heck, I’ll just quote a bit of what Eurogamer said instead, and then you can pop over to IGN and read all about it properly.

The best bit about The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is that it lets you be almost everyone from Middle-Earth, including the baddies. You can expect to be Cave-trolls, Oliphaunts, Ents, Balrogs, and even the Witch King, Saruman and Sauron himself.

There is an entire evil campaign waiting to be unlocked after you finish the good story, and it begins with you as a Ringwraith capturing Frodo and delivering the Ring to Sauron.

You can play both campaigns with up to four friends online or in split-screen, or just hop into eight-player competitive battles.

Oh, and it’s for PC, PS3, and XBox360.

Proper article at IGN.

Is it the same license as the movies?

If it had the movie music etc etc I’d probably be in, despite generally not understanding LotR.

I think it sounds dull because it is the same game with a different package.

If it is the same as the other type of Battlefront games then I really doubt they made this one any special, why?

Just because this is using LOTR setting and units doesn’t mean the gameplay will be different.

If you replace long range weapons with bows and such it is more or less the same.

If you replace close range weapon with spear, throwing axes and such you still end up with the same if not more slow and annoying game play.

But in this case it seems a bit different though but at the same time it doesn’t if you play these type of games you quickly realize it.

I think someone should kidnap these people and throw them down a volcano for destroying LOTR over and over.

I am usually disappointed with those type of IP games.

The fact that people encourage companies to stay lazy and make games based on original IP is less then disastrously to know.

I don’t really care if someone creates an awesome game based on an original IP, I am still getting tired by the same thing over and over.

The only setting that I think was successfully was the StarWars game which brings new story line and good rpg elements.

In LOTR case it is impossible to do that because the writer is long gone and can’t really reveal what is missing and what people have yet to know.

Anyway, stop encouraging people to make games based original IP.

They couldn’t create a new world and different unit?

But I think other people will enjoy the game.

Gosh that’s a lot of opinion based on a press release.

I wish more people had them. They help carry a conversation. Or get someone killed.
